A curated archive of Opiliones taxonomy, history & legacy
Created and curated by Adriano Brilhante Kury (Museu Nacional/UFRJ)
Adriano Brilhante Kury is a Brazilian zoologist and world-renowned specialist in the systematics of the arachnid order Opiliones (harvestmen). Born in Rio de Janeiro on June 29, 1962, he graduated in Biological Sciences (Zoology) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1986, obtained his Master's degree in Biological Sciences (Zoology) from the National Museum in Rio (MNRJ) in 1991, and completed his PhD in Biological Sciences (Zoology) at the University of São Paulo in 1993.
Currently serving as Full Professor (Professor Titular) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Curator of the Arachnida and Myriapoda collections at the Museu Nacional, Kury has established himself as a leading authority on World harvestmen taxonomy. His research encompasses the biodiversity of Neotropical arachnids, with particular emphasis on the Andean and Atlantic Forest opilionofauna.
Recognition: Listed among the 2% most influential scientists in the world by Stanford University research led by John Ioannidis (November 2020): "Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators"
Kury has extensive experience in Zoology and Zoological Nomenclature, focusing on the taxonomy of recent groups. He is a world-renowned specialist in Opiliones systematics, with around 200 published works on this order of arachnids. His comprehensive approach to taxonomy has resulted in the description of numerous new species and the clarification of complex systematic relationships within harvestmen.
He has supervised multiple Master's dissertations and PhD theses on arachnids and myriapods, and served as the Chelicerata coordinator for the Taxonomic Catalog of Brazilian Fauna. Kury is the organizer and principal author of the online World Catalogue of Opiliones (WCO-Lite) and serves as editor for Opiliones in the journals BIODIVERSITY DATA JOURNAL and ZOOKEYS.
Following the devastating fire that struck the Museu Nacional in September 2018, Kury has been actively leading the reconstruction of the AracnoLab and its invaluable scientific collections. His dedication extends beyond research to the development of digital resources that serve the global arachnological community, including the OmniPaper project and various online databases.
Among the important works by Kury may be cited the Catalogue of New World Laniatores (Kury 2003), the first cladistic analysis of the Agoristenidae, Cosmetidae, Cranaidae, Cryptogeobiidae, a definition of the early lineages of the Gonyleptidae, removal of Tricommatinae from Phalangodidae, reallocation of several genera from different families and subfamilies, definition of important anatomic terms, such as bulla, coda, dry stain, equuleus, pergula, rutrum, stragulum, stylar caps. Kury is also the creator of OmniPaper, a massive online resource for taxonomic literature on Opiliones. Kury was the first to recognize some groups today widely accepted in their present configuration after major rearrangement, such as the Bourguyiinae, Cranaidae, Gonyleptoidea, Manaosbiidae, Mitobatinae, Nomoclastidae. He detected a very stable clade of Gonyleptidae, which is informally called K92. He also proposed some supra-generic taxa such as Ampycinae, Beloniscidae, Cearininae, Cobaniinae, Cryptogeobiidae, DRMN, Escadabiidae, Globipedidae, Globibuninae, Grassatores, Heteropachylinae, Icaleptidae, MECO, Metasarcinae, Microsetata, Zamorinae.

Adriano Brilhante Kury has published over 190 works specifically on Opiliones taxonomy and systematics between 1989 and 2025, making him the most prolific contemporary researcher in harvestmen studies. His publications include major systematic revisions, comprehensive catalogues, phylogenetic analyses, and descriptions of numerous new taxa. The publications are organized chronologically in decades below, and in quinquennia for more recent prolific years.
