BIOGRAPHY:
Adolph Eduard Grube est un zoologiste polonais, né le 18 mai 1812 à Königsberg et mort le 23 juin 1880 à Wrocław. Après des études au Collegium Fridericianum, il entre à l’université où le doyen de l’université, Bulack, l’encourage à persévérer dans l’étude de l’histoire naturelle. Il est remarqué également par Karl Ernst von Baer (1792-1876) qui enseigne l’anatomie comparée. Après avoir obtenu son titre de docteur en philosophie en 1836, il revient à Königsberg où est professeur assistant en zoologie et devient titulaire en 1843. Il se marie alors avec Józefiną Schäfer. Il enseigne, à partir de 1844, la zoologie à Dorpat (aujourd’hui Tartu en Estonie). Influent enseignant, Konstanty Górski (1827-1901), qui enseignera la zoologie à l’Académie de médecine et de chirurgie de Varsovie, et Benedykt Ivanovich Dybowski (1833-1930), qui deviendra un grand spécialiste de la Sibérie, suit notamment ses cours. Il succède à Johann Ludwig Gavenhorst (1777-1857) à la chaire de zoologie de Varsovie, il reçoit en outre la direction du musée de zoologie et dirige le département de zoologie de l’université. Grube étudie presque tous les groupes zoologiques et décrit près de cinq cents nouveaux genres et contribue à enrichir les collections du musée. The next director, between 1842-1844 was Alexander BUNGE , an acknowledeged botanist and a pupil of K.C.Ledebour's. The Chair of Zoology was established in 1843 and, on the recommendations of Prof. K. E. Baer, Adolf Eduard GRUBE , a former student of his, was called from Königsberg to become its first professor. He was at the same time director of Zoology Cabinet (between 1844 - 1856). He was a zoologist by profession and this showed its positive effects on the Cabinet's activities. He replenished the collections, founded a special library and encouraged scientific research. During his time A.Schrenk who presented to the museum a collection of birds' crania and mollusc shells, which is preserved till today, looked after the collection of molluscs. After Prof.A.Grube was transferred to Breslau University, Prof. Hermann Martin ASMUSS became director of the cabinet for a short time between 1857-1859.
