BIOGRAPHY:
Né à Wihtley Chapel, Hexhamshire, Northumberland (Angleterre), le 20 novembre 1862. Maître d'école au St. Bede's College à Durham en 1882, il a plus tard complété ses études scientifiques sous les auspices du Ministère de l'Enseignement. A sa mise à la retraite, il s'est retiré à Liverpool où il vit et travaill e encore aujourd'hui (1939). Il s'est particulièrement dévoué aux sciences naturelles qui furent son grand attrait et auxquelles il a consacré les loisirs de sa longue vie. Membre du Yorkshire Naturalist's Union depuis 1909, il en fut président en 1927 et a fait ajouter les section s Arachnida et Plant Galls aux activités de cette Société. Correspondant de la Société entomologique de Londres depuis 1919, il a appartenu pendant plusieurs années au bureau exécutif du Lancashire and Cheshire Fauna Committee. Ses recherches scientifiques portent surtout sur les Arachnides (Araignées, Opilions, Pseudoscorpions et Acariens) dont il a commencé l'étude en 1895. En ce qui concerne les Araignées, il a donné de très nombreuses listes de capture de ces animaux provenant de récoltes faites en Angleterre, notamment dans le Northumberland, le Yorkshire et le Lancashire; mais ses listes faunistiques, en plus de leur intérêt même, ne perdent pas de vue les problèmes de l'origine de cette faune, de sa distribution géographique et de ses rapports avec le milieu.
