Clarence James GOODNIGHT


Birthdate: May 30, 1914
Birthplace: Gillespie, Illinois, USA
Died: August 9, 1987

BIOGRAPHY: Clarence’s father worked in the coal mines of southern Illinois and may have died of black lung disease. He was an accomplished farmer and gardener on the side, so maybe Clarence’s interest was natural. He pursued his career and got his bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He taught at a number of schools, but mostly at Purdue University and Western Michigan University.

Marie Louise GOODNIGHT

Birthdate: August 27, 1916.
Birthplace: Blue Island, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, USA
Died: [day?] [month?] 1998

BIOGRAPHY: Marie Louise’s beginnings were also somewhat humble, and her mother only had a 6th grade education. Her father worked on the Rock Island Railroad. Her maiden name was Ostendorf, and her parents helped people make it to the U.S. from East Berlin after it was divided. She attended Kansas State University and the University of Illinois, receiving a master's degree from Illinois. She always regretted not having pursued her Ph.D., but in those days, women science students were quite rare. She certainly could have done it though, as she was always an exemplary student. In high school she was the valedictorian and considered somewhat of an oddball in an era when women were out looking for husbands!

Clarence and Marie Louise met at the University of Illinois. Their favorite professor was Dr. Victor E. Shelford.
