Embrik STRAND

Died: 3 Nov 1947

Born June 2, 1876 at Aal (Norway). After completing his studies at Oslo, he became curator of the Zoological Museum of that city, but in 1903 he went to Germany to complete his zoological training at Marburg University and two years later he was called by the Museum of Stuttgart where he studied and arranged the collection of spiders, and he did the same with those of the Museum Tübingen and Senckenbergische Museum Frankfurt am Main. In 1907 he was appointed to the Zoological Museum in Berlin, where he remained for many years and finally in 1922 he became professor at the Institute of Zoology and Hydrobiology, Riga (Latvia), of which he was also director. During a life of labour during which he provided a prodigious work, Strand also assumed from 1910 to 1929 the drafting of the famous German magazine Archiv für Naturgeschichte and founded in 1928 his Folia Zoologica et hydrobiologica, publication of wide importance and particularly sought. In terms of his personal studies, he worked primarily in the Lepidoptera and the Spiders, but it is mainly the latter that from 1898 to 1922 have been the subject of his work and he has studied many collections from various points over the world, as can be seen on the long list of his works.
